What are migraines?
A migraine is a headache of varying intensity, often accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. Preventive and pain-relieving medications can help manage migraine headaches.
Do migraines qualify me for medical marijuana use?
Under Missouri’s medical marijuana rules, migraines are a qualifying medical condition. Any Missourian who suffers from intractable migraines is eligible to receive their medical marijuana card. This is great news since there is an overwhelming amount of evidence that shows cannabis can help treat migraines!
How does medical marijuana help treat migraines?
While there has been anecdotal evidence supporting marijuana as a migraine treatment, it’s only recently that scientists have discovered hard evidence to back up this claim. One such study looked at the effects of both ingested and inhaled weed in migraine patients. The study found:
Patients had a decrease in the number of migraines, which fell from 10.4 to 4.6 per month.
On average, 19.8 percent of participants said that medical cannabis helped prevent their chronic headaches.
Around 11.6 percent of patients said weed stopped their migraines altogether.
Approximately 85 percent of participants reported medical marijuana helped them have fewer migraines each month.
Smoking or inhaling cannabis not only offered migraine patients the fastest relief, but also reduced the overall number of migraines experienced.
